Celebrating Veterans Beyond Veteran’s Day: What We Do for You
On Veteran’s Day we honor veterans. As stated by the Code of Federal Regulations, a veteran is defined as “a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service.” While this is certainly a more formal definition, it is far from complete in terms of capturing what it truly means to be a military veteran in this great land. A veteran is someone who took on the responsibility of protecting and upholding the values, principles and beliefs that make this country great. Therefore, these individuals have more than earned our unwavering respect and be served themselves, especially older adults entering the next chapter in their lives.
At Spring Creek Senior Living Community in Plano, Texas, we aim to do just that: serve our resident veterans in ways they have more than earned thanks to their time of service in the armed forces.
We start by first recognizing and celebrating the national holiday that honors all veterans: Veteran’s Day.
History of Veteran’s Day
Veteran’s Day has long been celebrated in our country, but it wasn’t always known as Veteran’s Day. In fact, Veteran’s Day originated as Armistice Day, which was first celebrated on November 11th in 1918 to commemorate the first year anniversary of the ending of World War I President Wilson declared November 11th Armistice Day to recognize the armistice signed one year prior between Germany and the Allies. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution that made Armistice Day an annual celebration.
It wasn’t until June 1st in 1954 that President Eisenhower renamed the holiday Veteran’s Day. Since then, the country has celebrated Veteran’s Day each November 11th annually.
Celebrating Veteran’s Day Today
An important thing to note about Veteran’s Day is how it is different from Memorial Day, another holiday honoring the men and women who have served our country. Veteran’s Day differs from Memorial Day in one significant way. Memorial Day primarily seeks to honor those who served in the military who have passed away or who lost their lives in military service. By contrast, Veteran’s Day honors all those who have served in the military, living or dead. It’s also a time to celebrate active military personnel and thank them for their service to our country.
Veterans come from all walks of life; they include our coworkers, friends, neighbors, parents, children and grandchildren. Here are some current facts about our United States veterans today:
- Seven million veterans served during the Vietnam War.
- Nine percent of veterans are women.
- Three million veterans have served throughout the War on Terrorism.
- There were 16 million Americans who served during World War II. Of those 16 million, there were 496,777 still alive as of 2018.
- Two million veterans were part of the Korean War.
- As of 2018, there were 18.2 million living veterans who served during at least one war.
